The problem
The product was already the document system of record for more than 6,500 organisations across North America and the UK — manufacturers, law firms, insurers, healthcare providers, state and municipal government, real estate. An install base that size is the constraint on the work, not the reward for it: every change has to land without disturbing a filing structure somebody's retention obligations sit on top of, in two delivery modes at once.
What we did
- 01
We joined the existing development team rather than taking a slice of the product to build alone — the sensible arrangement when the risk in the work is regression rather than construction.
- 02
Work spanned the capture path (scanning and import, classification, filing accuracy checks), the workflow engine, and search and retrieval across the whole corpus.
- 03
The same codebase had to ship on-premise and as a hosted service, so anything that assumed one deployment shape was a defect regardless of whether it worked.
Outcome
The platform continued to serve its install base through the upgrade, delivered both on-premise and as a cloud-hosted service. Our engineers worked as part of the client's own development team throughout.
