The problem

Hospitality operators buying a POS were buying three things and integrating them themselves: a till that has to keep taking orders when the network drops, a back office a manager can run several sites from, and a guest-facing app worth putting a logo on. The distributor's whole proposition was to sell that as one product, which meant it had to be built as one product.

What we did

  1. 01

Terminal first, native on Windows, because the till is the component that cannot degrade: order entry and payment, transaction history, cash drawer, X and Z reports, shift and break clocking, employee verification, and a second-monitor display for the customer side of the counter.

  2. 02

Back office as a web application over the same API — inventory, item editor, employees, store management, customers and marketing — with reporting built for someone comparing sites rather than reading one.

  3. 03

Guest apps built native on iOS and Android rather than wrapped. Ordering and payment are the two flows where a web view is immediately obvious to the person holding the phone, and this app carries the loyalty scheme as well as the payment processor integration.

Outcome

The platform runs in more than a hundred stores across the UK, India and Australia, sold as a single system rather than as three products a reseller has to make talk to each other. Development is ongoing.
